Our beach and nature reserve
Where else will you find a friendly and welcoming holiday park such as Pinewoods that backs onto both a natural beach and nature reserve? That’s why our visitors love coming back year after year.
Our setting is incredibly special. To the north is the most amazing Wells beach – picture brightly coloured beach huts backed by pinewoods and flanked only by sand (not a spot of concrete in sight!). To the west is Abraham’s Bosom Lake (a triple SSSI) and the Holkham National Nature Reserve, alive with multiple species throughout the year. It truly is an oasis where you can relax, unwind and leave all your cares behind.
Wells beach stretches as far as the eye can see, finally merging with Holkham beach. Flanked by sand dunes and often dotted with shells, it’s hard to believe you’re not somewhere tropical when the sun is shining and the sky is crystal clear. Most of the beach is dog-friendly but a section is dog-free so everyone can feel comfortable and at home. You’ll sometimes come across seals and nesting birds as you progress towards Holkham beach, which our wardens cordon off during nesting season. Protecting habitats and wildlife is something we feel incredibly passionate about. Yet, with miles of sands there’s space for everyone and everything – even at the height of summer. No matter whether you fancy relaxing with a book, topping up your tan, building an impressive sandcastle or playing a game of cricket, the beach is yours to enjoy. And you can even hire a beach hut to add that extra spot of convenience to your day.
The Holkham National Nature Reserve is one of only two privately-managed reserves in the country, and our conservation team carry out internationally-renowned work to protect and enhance biodiversity and both thriving and more vulnerable species. Led by Holkham’s General Manager of Conservation, Jake Fiennes, the team of wardens has delivered some standout success stories, supporting species including Cattle Egrets (most often found in the tropics, subtropics, and warm-temperate zones), Oystercatchers and Spoonbills. From our park you can walk to The Lookout – the café and visitor centre on the reserve – via the beach or path behind the pine woods. There you can learn about live projects, recent sightings and sit with a pair of binoculars to see what you can spot. And there’s no need to think you’re going crazy if you spot the odd cow, as we use Holkham’s herd of Belted Galloways to naturally graze the marshland at selective times of the year!
